Buprenex Addiction

An injectable form of the drug Buprenorphine, Buprenex is used to relieve moderate to severe pain and is administered by IV or deep intramuscular injection.  When Buprenorphine is prescribed by a physician in tablet form, it is used for the treatment of addiction.  With effects similar to those of morphine, codeine and heroin, it is highly addictive and can cause both physical and psychological dependence.  For those reasons alone, it is easy to under why Buprenex addiction is a growing problem throughout South Florida as well as the rest of the United States.

Unfortunately, due to its addictive qualities, tolerance to Buprenex can build up quickly.  Because of this, the FDA treats Buprenorphine as a controlled narcotic substance and is not administered for depression or psychological distress, or in over-dosage situations, even in an ‘approved indication’ setting.

Buprenex addiction affects people from all walks of life, regardless of professional, economical or social status.  Over time, self medication with Buprenorphine in an attempt to avoid withdrawal, may lead to excessive doses, far beyond the original prescription.

Common side effects of Buprenex include impaired thinking and reactions as well as slowed breathing.  During withdrawal, patients with a Buprenex addiction may experience symptoms very similar to other opiates.  These symptoms include, but are not limited to:

-       Aching limbs

-       Cold sweats

-       Depression

-       Nausea

-       Vomiting

-       Unbearable pain

-       Distress

When combined with other sedatives or alcohol, Buprenex presents dangerous side effects and can promote possible fatal respiratory depression.  If you, or someone you know, is struggling with Buprenex addiction (or any other type of addiction for that matter), there is help.  The Delray Center for Healing offers many personalized programs, including inpatient and outpatient treatment.
