Fake Pot Addiction in South Florida

Synthetic cannabis, also known as fake pot, is a psychoactive chemical and herbal product that mimics the effects of cannabis upon consumption.  Fake pot addition in South Florida is on the rise as more and more, manufacturers of K2 and Spice (two of the most commonly  known fake pot brands) are being marketed as herbal incense.

 

Hitting the scene for the first time in the early 2000s, it was believed that fake pot achieved similar effects of marijuana through a blend of legal herbs, however in 2008 it was discovered that this was not in fact the case.  Fake pot addiction in South Florida is becoming more of a problem because of these synthetic cannabis’ containing synthetic cannabinoids and, these synthetic cannabinoids act similarly on the body to the way THC does when individuals use marijuana.

 

Although it is, for the most part, legal in the United States, there are compounds within synthetic cannabis currently scheduled under federal law by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  Those compounds not yet permanently scheduled have been temporarily scheduled until final determination of their status can be made.  The DEA considers fake pot addiction in South Florida to be a problem due to a surge in emergency room visits and calls to poison-control centers.  Additionally, many states have independently passed acts making fake pot illegal under state law and others have banned the sale of synthetic cannabis.
