The Pace of Mindfulness

Are you moving as fast as a jack rabbit, moving with a purpose slow as a snail or sitting still growing like a barnacle? Becoming mindful of the pace of your overall life can be indicative of many things. Sometimes people run around without much attention in the moment because they are rushing from one thing to the next. Keeping busy is a great way to stay out of touch with our inner voice. Our culture often applauds this pace and people admire how much a person can get done in a day. In fact this is often a trap we get stuck in – we cannot imagine cutting out any single activity because we have accepted this as our life. Sometimes we are in a race to gather up all the things and experiences we can without any awareness of the consequences or even the worthiness of the things we chase. On the flip side we may be a person that has grown comfortable with being completely still – unable to move, often rooted in the past out of fear, disability, or both. This may be a comfortable way of life and some are even able to make it sustainable by getting the basic needs met for survival. The barnacle lives attached to their way of life and is rendered incapable of moving beyond or breaking free to find a different way, they are just stuck! Perhaps you can identify with the snail that moves slow and steady towards a goal. The snail senses what it needs and moves deliberately toward it with awareness of when to be still. This is a simplification of how humans move about in the world but can be useful to ask yourself, “What is my general pace?” and “Am I getting to where I need to go?” For the month of May we will explore pace of life in Beginning Meditation. We will play with it and explore how we can change our pace with the goal of living a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

Summer Fun in Delray Beach

The summer season is quickly approaching; which means beautiful weather and sunny skies for South Florida. If you’re struggling to find fun, healthy and inexpensive activities, look no further than right here in our own backyard. Delray Beach Watersports offers kayaking, surfing and boating lessons and rentals. Rent a beach cruiser ($15 for 4 hours) for a few hours and bike to the beach or down A1A. (Inquire by phone 561-865-5522). Beach umbrellas, lounge chairs and small cabanas are available for rent right on Delray Beach. If you want to target inner spiritual peace, City of Delray offers Sunday Sunset Yoga. Class starts at 5:30 pm on the north side of the beach (toward George Bush Blvd) and a donation of $10-$20 is requested. Instructors encourage you to bring a mat or beach towel and a bathing suit if you wish to take a swim after class. Check out the Sandoway House Nature Center for a closer look at sharks, shells and more! There are also plenty of opportunities for volunteering within walking distance of the Center. Watch What You Say: Don’t Encourage An Eating Disorder

The prevalence of eating disorders is pervasive in our society. Yet, despite the amount of attention that has been drawn to this deadly disease in recent years, many people in our society remain naïve about what an eating disorder is, and in turn, they may send dangerous messages that might even encourage eating disorder behavior without even knowing it. The following are examples of what NOT to do:

Giving praise based on physical appearance
Complementing someone when they diet or lose weight
Suggesting that someone lose weight
Negative body talk
Discussing measurements, weights, clothing sizes
Identifying foods as “good” or “bad”
Mocking someone else’s eating habits
Placing importance on weight
Making negative comments about one’s own eating choices
Labeling someone as “well” or “healthy” because they are thin
Pushing more exercise than needed
Encouraging perfection
Assuming that an overweight person wants or needs to lose weight
Allowing the media to dictate what body type is acceptable

What is Wellness?

You hear the word wellness a lot but what is wellness? As stated in the dictionary wellness is “the state or condition of being in good physical and mental health”; when you come right down to it, stress affects every aspect of wellness.

Okay great now that we can define it how to we achieve it? Keep it simple start with the basics:

Be Positive

A positive attitude can help you reduce stress, which often contributes to illness. By being positive you affect others in a way that may improve their well being. Being positive can also improve how you see yourself and others, which in turn will lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Stop Bad Habits

Look at your lifestyle and work towards making changes.

Take Care of Your Body
Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes. Get your yearly physical check up and go see the dentist at least every 6 months.

Sleep
Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Rest will give your mind and body the fuel it needs to manage stress.

Eat Well
Don’t skip meals. Eating a balanced diet will help stabilize your moods and reduce your stress.

Meditate
If you can’t or have never meditated that’s fine but challenge yourself the next time you are driving alone in your car by turning off the radio and your phone. Drive with NO distractions and just be present.

Life is busy and there are lots of distractions but by focusing on wellness the life you have can be so much better!

Your Omega-3 Source Matters

Omega-3 fats are essential fatty acids, meaning they are necessary for health but can’t be made by our body, only obtained through food. They have been identified as a major contributor to cardiovascular health, and because they decrease inflammation can help lower risk for cancer and arthritis. There is strong and growing research on its role in brain health as well: improving cognition (brain memory and performance), behavior function and mood stability. Two types of Omega-3’s, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), help repair the stress-related damage in our brain; ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), helps prevent it. Some symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include mood swings or depression, poor circulation, dry skin, poor memory, fatigue and heart problems.

Optimal food sources of EPA and DHA are found in cold-water fish, (salmon, mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and halibut), algae and krill. Look for soy, flax, canola, seeds and nuts to give you ALA’s preventive properties, but they need to be converted into EPA and DHA in our body to work effectively, and there are various factors that can interfere.

To optimize your Omega-3 intake:

Aim for 2 servings of fatty fish per week.
Include a fish oil or krill oil supplement, not one simply labeled “Omega-3”.
Aim for at least 440 mg EPA and 440 mg DHA for beginning therapeutic benefit.
Inform your physician, particularly if you take blood thinners or have diabetes.
If you experience fish burps with supplementation, keep it frozen and consider taking it at bedtime.
