The Bipolar Disorder IOP at the Delray Center is the next progression of Bipolar Disorder treatment that can follow either inpatient care or PHP. The IOP level of care is the essential transition between the more intensive care levels and regular outpatient treatment. The objective is to gradually return patients to their full functional capacity while still offering substantial clinical support and structure to prevent even a partial manic or depressive relapse. Patients that are less than 6 months recovered from their most recent mood episode are at still at a high relapse risk and derive great benefit from this support.
Bipolar Disorder as a disease poses numerous special challenges due to the difficulty of making an accurate diagnosis and due to how many depressive or manic triggers can exist in everyday life. Hence, many of these challenges to maintaining mood stability differ from those seen in other disorders and require certain specialized interventions. The focus of these different interventions may vary over time, as the needs of the individual seeking long term mood stability will change. Several of the Bipolar Disorder PHP therapeutic modalities are also seen in the IOP.
Individual expressive therapy, family therapy, individual fitness, therapeutic massage, and individual acupuncture are available as program upgrades as well.
The Bipolar Disorder IOP is a part-time, 3 to 5 day a week program with a strong therapeutic structure. However, this IOP is a minimum of 8 weeks. Patients who complete a steady transition from PHP to IOP and then to regular outpatient treatment are the most successful. Furthermore, many of our long-term success cases regularly make positive contributions to the newer clients, nurturing a strong therapeutic community. Overall, solid connections to a supportive community and a therapeutic system are the best predictors of successful treatment.
Our IOP patients are usually heavily involved with the therapeutic community, which provides them with a great support system and helps them prevent relapse. Additionally, the Bipolar Disorder IOP prepares patients for long-term remission of their depressive and manic symptoms, with the ultimate goal of long-term sustainable mood stability.
