What Are the Types of Different Medication for Anxiety Treatment?

There are several types of different medication for anxiety treatment, which are often used in conjunction with psychotherapy to relieve anxiety in the long term. Which different medication for anxiety treatment should you use? That depends on your specific anxiety disorder, any medical conditions you may have, your history with drug and alcohol abuse, any personal concerns you may have about taking medication for anxiety. Some people don’t like the thought of treating anxiety with medication, but that’s okay, because there are effective treatments that don’t require medication.

The most common of all the types of different medication for anxiety treatment, benzodiazepines work by calming the central nervous system. These types of different medication for anxiety treatment include Valium, Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin. They’re also used as muscle relaxers and pain relievers. They’re used to treat panic attacks because they act quickly.

Another of the types of different medication for anxiety treatment is antidepressants, like SSRIs, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants and newer antidepressants. These types of different medication for anxiety treatment are preferable for many anxiety disorders because they’re much safer – they’re not habit forming and they’re less likely to be abuse. However, they need to build up in your system for four to six weeks to start working, so they can’t be used to treat panic attacks. Instead, they’re better for chronic anxiety problems. These types of different medication for anxiety treatment include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro.

Buspirone is one of the newer drugs for anxiety treatment. It works by boosting levels of serotonin and decreasing dopamine levels. It is a slow-acting drug that begins relieving anxiety symptoms in about two weeks. It’s mostly used to treat generalized anxiety disorder.

Beta blocker medications were developed to treat high blood pressure and other heart problems, but they can also be used to treat anxiety. They work by blocking norepinephrine, a stress hormone that triggers the physical symptoms of anxiety. They don’t relieve the emotional symptoms of anxiety, however, so they’re best for situational anxiety, like fear of flying or public speaking.
