The Delray Center for Healing in Jacksonville offers Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing therapy, as part of our suite of outpatient mental health services. EMDR is an innovative, evidence-based form of psychotherapy designed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as address emotionally disturbing memories that can contribute to low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, and other psychological problems. The clinical team at the Delray Center is trained in the latest EMDR counseling protocols, and we provide a safe, structured, and highly supportive environment for the processing of past traumatic experiences.
Our Jacksonville EMDR Therapy
EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a newer form of trauma-focused therapy, developed a little over 25 years ago to relieve distress associated with traumatic memories. Through the use of highly specified protocols, EMDR helps remove any mental blocks related to trauma, in order to accelerate the healing process. Numerous studies have reinforced its efficacy, and it is recognized by both the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for trauma. This therapeutic modality works by improving the patient’s ability to access and process traumatic memories and then helps to facilitate the resolution of those memories.
At the Delray Center, our Jacksonville EMDR therapy track allows participants to reformulate negative beliefs, and deal with almost all symptoms connected with PTSD. Clients receiving EMDR therapy work with their therapist to determine which memories to target and to reframe those events in an emotionally healthy way. Bilateral stimulation (such as eye movement) is used during part of the session and works similar to rapid eye movement during sleep, to draw up unconscious associations about past traumatic events. Often times the client is not aware of these associations prior to beginning their therapy session. Once arisen, these associations and any attached feelings can be processed correctly.
