Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition that can be mild or severe and affects all age groups, including adolescents and older adults. For adults diagnosed with OCD, over one-half suffer from serious impairment due to their condition. Many individuals who fall into the severe OCD category will be labeled as “non-responsive” or “treatment-resistant.” This means their condition is not improved by traditional treatments like medication or talk therapy. Until very recently, people with severe or treatment-resistant OCD have had very few pathways to improving their quality of life.
Thankfully, new therapies and treatments have emerged in recent years that can help even the most serious cases of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The Delray Center specializes in the outpatient treatment of OCD, including severe and refractory cases, using a variety of new technologies and clinical modalities.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can be a life-long condition that can increase in severity over time if left untreated. The disorder is characterized by recurring obsessions, compulsions, or both. Obsessions are repetitive, intrusive thoughts that are usually inappropriate or irrelevant. Examples of obsessions include a constant fear of germs or contamination, a fixation on symmetry, or unwanted thoughts about sex and self-harm. Compulsions are ritualistic behaviors used to try and neutralize obsessive thoughts. Examples of this include excessive hand washing, or arranging items in a particular way. As the name indicates, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can become all-consuming, taking several hours every day for OCD sufferers.
The Delray Center incorporates the H7 TMS coil, the only TMS technology designed especially for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, into our outpatient OCD treatment. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an advanced therapy that uses magnetic pulses to improve brain function and reduce mental health symptoms. TMS therapy for OCD targets the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, stimulating healthy neural activity to counteract the surges in brain activity related to OCD symptoms.
TMS therapy has high success rates when used to treat OCD, and can help patients reduce the number of medications they take. The treatment is both safe and painless, with virtually no side effects, and no restrictions to activity (such as driving) after treatment sessions. Each session of TMS only takes 20 minutes and can be arranged conveniently around a patient’s work or school schedule. In order to maximize the results of TMS, it is often recommended that patients continue seeing a psychiatrist, and engage in therapy or outpatient programming.
For those in need of a more aggressive clinical intervention, OCD TMS therapy can be paired with comprehensive outpatient programming at the Delray Center for Healing. Our partial hospitalization program offers full-time day treatment for many mental health conditions, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Our comprehensive outpatient program combines a number of treatment modalities to provide intensive care to individuals struggling with OCD. Each outpatient program is developed specifically for the client, based on an initial psychiatric evaluation. Some of the services included in our partial hospitalization program include:
The Delray Center for Healing’s partial hospitalization program is ideal for patients who have tried other treatments for OCD in the past without success. The combination of advanced psychopharmacology, intensive therapy, and holistic wellness services heals both the physical and mental damage caused by prolonged distress due to OCD.
