Singer and actress, Selena Gomez, is reportedly seeking mental health treatments, like DBT treatment, after an “emotional breakdown”. Gomez has been open about her struggles with lupus and mental health.
In 2016, she announced she was taking time off to focus on her health stating, “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks, and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body’s immunity system attacks parts of the body. This causes inflammation that can affect organs and tissues such as the heart, kidneys, skin, and joints. Gomez underwent a kidney transplant in the summer of 2017 due to complications from her lupus.
While lupus has no direct impact on mental health, chronic illnesses are commonly linked to them. It is not uncommon for those with chronic illnesses to also have anxiety and depression.
Gomez reportedly broke down due to a low white blood cell count. She was hospitalized twice in the past few weeks due to this and had a panic attack during the second hospital stay.
The singer is now undergoing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) at a treatment center. DBT is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on changing patterns, communication, emotional regulation, and mindfulness.
This isn’t Gomez’s first time in a mental health treatment facility or undergoing DBT. In the past, she has praised the treatment and its impact on her. She has stated that DBT “changed [her] life”.
