More About Aerial Yoga

There are many types of yoga that each include several elements and techniques. Aerial yoga is a relatively new type of yoga that first emerged in New York City in the year 2008. The founder of this recently developed type of yoga, Christopher Harrison, was an acrobat who incorporated acrobatic methods, sports, and dancing into this novel yoga practice.

This unique form of yoga combines traditional postures used in yoga and other exercises with aerial guidance by way of silk hammocks. These hammocks are hung from the ceiling to provide support and aid during pose work. The hammocks can hold up to 2,000 pounds, so they are sturdy enough to provide all the assistance of suspension during yoga sessions.

Certainly, more advanced yoga participants will enjoy the added challenge of aerial suspension while practicing poses. However, beginners can also benefit from this gravity-defying technique as it helps to increase flexibility and strength with every session.

Physical and Mental Benefits

It’s important to find and utilize tools that help balance both mental and physical health for optimal wellbeing. Because aerial yoga offers both physical and psychological health benefits, it’s a great tool for individuals to use while treating various mental and physical health issues. Some of the benefits people take away from using it may include:

Reduced Back Pain: People who have experienced spinal injury live with daily chronic pain. This can lead to concurrent issues. For example, self-medicating with drugs and alcohol, otherwise known as substance abuse disorder. So, it’s important for people living with chronic pain due to back issues to find solutions in order to manage pain. Aerial yoga is great for back pain injuries as it uses suspension to stretch the body, including the back. By using gravity to stretch the back, many find relief due to the relaxing decompression of the muscles.

Increases Concentration: Aerial yoga doesn’t only stretch the body – it stretches the mind too. It takes great focus to perform each pose while balancing on aerial hammocks used in this type of yoga. That level of focus help alleviate the mind from other worries, if only for a few moments. By allowing the mind to concentrate on one’s own mental and physical wellbeing, yoga improves overall concentration and helping to increase one’s focus.

Helps with Mood Management: All exercising can help to alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety. Thus, helping us to better manage our moods and emotions. Aerial yoga increases blood circulation to the brain much like any other exercise would. This results in an increase in endorphin production and the stress-relieving components that come with the release of these feel-good hormones.
